Alvar Sunol, was born in 1935 outside Barcelona, Spain. He has worked in many mediums, from oils, watercolors, ceramics, serigraphy, and bronze, but became well known for his original stone lithographs.
Alvar was adamant that no matter what medium, he had to be the one to create the works. In the early 1960s, he began working on an old lithographic press used in the 1600s to print early Bibles. He works on the stone with lithographic crayons and adds lace and other materials to create the texture. Finally, he would then, after printing the entire edition, add embossing intaglio printmaking to the works.  Later,
he embellished his work by hand with watercolor. Another thing that makes his works so unusual is the amount of imagery he uses to tell stories. The doves represent peace, the fruit represents the goodness
of life, the candles represent bringing light to a subject, and the apple represents wisdom. His people are often together, and you can feel the love in their presence. One great example is when he includes a
watermelon in his creation. Alvar said that watermelon is a fruit rarely eaten alone and is an example of the community sharing important times, like at the dinner table. This Catalan artist has had many
museum exhibitions throughout the world, and the owner of these works, Rob Rowen, had Alvar visit his gallery in Tampa 7 times, with the last one also coinciding with an exhibition of his works at the Appleton Museum in Ocala, Florida.
