Elements
Elements started as a 15-foot root from a weeping willow tree that was dislodged during
a storm on Keuka Lake in New York State. Willow tree roots naturally incorporate
foreign matter while searching for water to nurture their invasive root system. This
willow root absorbed the flat basalt rocks found in the Finger Lakes region.
The piece washed up on the artist's beach, where he retrieved it and dried it out before
sculpting. He sculpted this piece from the tip of the root mass. The wood resembles
soft; delicate flames contrasted with hard plutonic rocks, a rare and unique element
presented by Mother Nature.
